Hon. Shelley C. Chapman (Ret.), senior counsel in Willkie’s Restructuring Department and Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution practice, has been named among the winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming American Lawyer Industry Awards 2025.
Prior to re-joining Willkie in 2022, Judge Chapman served as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York beginning in 2010. A widely recognized leader of the bankruptcy bar, she oversaw the Lehman Brothers Holdings bankruptcy case – the largest bankruptcy case in history – and many other chapter 11 mega-cases and chapter 15 cross-border proceedings, including Boston Generating, Innkeepers, Ambac, LightSquared, Sbarro, NII Holdings, Sabine Oil & Gas, Nine West, Century 21, Aeromexico, and Philippine Airlines.
As Chair of Willkie’s Alternative Dispute Resolution practice, Judge Chapman recently mediated a proposed $6.5 billion settlement that would resolve thousands of opioid cases against Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, while compensating victims and funding opioid addiction treatment programs nationwide.
She will be honored at The American Lawyer Industry Awards in New York on Nov. 13.
