New York, NY, (October 4, 2022) -- Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP today announced that Richard Roeder has joined the Firm as a partner, based in Germany. A widely recognized global trade, compliance and investigation lawyer, Richard will be a part of the Firm’s Litigation Department, in the Compliance, Investigations & Enforcement, and Global Trade & Investment practice groups.

His addition will extend the Firm’s global trade, compliance and investigations work in Europe, continuing the Firm’s investment and expansion in the German market. Richard’s move follows several prominent German partner and counsel hires in recent years, including partners Simon Weiss, Joseph Marx and Anne Kleffmann in 2022, Jens-Olrik Murach in 2021, as well as internal promotions.

Richard focuses on global trade, compliance and investigations, as well as transactional regulatory risk assessments and advises clients from various industries on sanctions, export controls, supply chain compliance, including managing the challenges posed by the divergence between U.S., EU, UK and Chinese regulatory requirements, as well as on anti-money-laundering and anti-corruption compliance.

His clients include in particular banks and insurance companies as well as companies from the automotive, mining, oil and gas, healthcare and information technology sectors. He has published extensively and regularly is called to speak on global trade and compliance related topics, including recently on the regulatory developments in China and those resulting from the Ukraine Crisis.

He previously served as a fellow of the Mercator Fellowship on International Affairs, working for the German Ministry of Economics, the German Foreign Service, the European Union and the United Nations Development Program. He was most recently of counsel at Gibson Dunn.

“As we continue to add new practices to our growing German market platform, which now includes a broad range of transactional, litigation and regulatory capabilities, Richard’s significant experience in sanctions, export control and supply chain compliance will enhance our capabilities in this rapidly changing area to meet the expanding needs of our clients in Germany and worldwide,” said Corporate & Financial Services partner Georg Linde, who heads Willkie’s Frankfurt office. “We are thrilled to welcome him to the Firm.”

Peter Burrell, head of Willkie’s Litigation, Compliance, Investigations & Enforcement and White Collar Defense Practice Groups in London, commented: “Sanctions activity and related government engagement has increased in volume and complexity worldwide, affecting our clients globally across numerous sectors. Richard’s depth of knowledge in global trade and investigations will strengthen our global and cross-border litigation, arbitration, compliance and enforcement bench and bring to our clients a valuable resource providing strategic counsel on challenging day-to issues.”

“Willkie is well-regarded for its seamless team of practitioners in the U.S., UK and Europe advising global clients worldwide on matters of sanctions and export controls, compliance and investigations,” said Richard Roeder. “I am thrilled to join the Firm’s growing German and European practice and look forward to helping to expand the Firm’s global trade, compliance and investigations capabilities.”
