Willkie participates in the New York State Mentoring Program, created in 1984 by Mario Cuomo, the late New York governor and former Willkie partner.
Bloomberg has published an article in its “Big Law Business” column on Willkie’s participation in a mentorship program created by the late New York governor Mario Cuomo, who joined Willkie as a partner in 1995 after leaving office. The article, entitled “Mario Cuomo’s Former Law Firm Joins NY Mentorship He Created in 1984,” discusses how Willkie mentors regularly meet with third graders from P.S. 111, a nearby elementary school.
The initiative, which matches at-risk and disadvantaged elementary school students throughout the state with mentors at a variety of organizations, is called the New York State Mentoring Program, and is being led by Matilda Cuomo. The program trains mentors and links them one-on-one with students who are identified by their schools.
The article highlights that 28 Willkie associates and staff have volunteered as mentors and have undergone state-provided mentor training. Partner Mitchell Auslander told Bloomberg, “It’s another great way to honor our former friend and partner, Mario Cuomo.” Mrs. Cuomo hopes that Willkie’s participation will spark other law firms to get involved in the program.
