The international press has widely reported that the Vietnamese Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) association has hired Willkie to represent it in fighting an antidumping complaint filed by the Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA). After interviewing seven major U.S. law firms, the Vietnamese shrimp industry formally retained Willkie, which also represented Vietnam's Ministry of Trade in the frozen fish fillet antidumping case last year. Willkie will also be representing the Thai shrimp industry in this multi-country case against Brazil, China, Ecuador, India, Thailand, and Vietnam. The complaints, filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission and Department of Commerce, seeks anti-dumping duties ranging from 30 to 267 percent. Shrimp is one of Vietnam’s key exports, earning $481 million in the U.S. market in 2002.  A ruling is expected within a year. Partner Kenneth Pierce and special counsel Matthew Nicely are leading the Willkie team handling the matter. Both practice in the firm’s International Trade Department in the Washington office.
