The June edition of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel features an interview with Willkie special counsel and Director of Diversity Initiatives Kim A. Walker.  Ms. Walker, who joined the firm in 1991, was appointed the firm’s first Director of Diversity Initiatives in March of this year. Ms. Walker told the MCC that as Director she is working to develop strategies that will maintain and enhance a supportive work environment. Specifically, she is working with the firm to design, develop and implement programs that will improve associate retention, promotion and career development and increase the number and tenure of minority associates. She is also focusing on recruitment efforts, stating that “you have to recruit the best to retain the best.” Ms. Walker discussed with the MCC the firm’s successful mentoring program and its long tradition of promoting diversity in the workplace. She told the publication that the firm’s commitment is demonstrated by the “amount of power and freedom” the partnership has bestowed upon her to make the program work. Ms. Walker is special counsel in the firm’s Intellectual Property Department in New York, specializing in transactions, licensing, counseling and enforcement.
