Conference focused on significant changes to the data privacy landscape, movement towards more stringent enforcement of data privacy laws, and other key data privacy issues and risks facing companies in all industries.

On January 30, the firm sponsored a half-day seminar entitled Data Privacy: Emerging Issues of Increasing Risk. The conference focused on significant changes to the data privacy landscape, movement towards more stringent enforcement of data privacy laws, and other key data privacy issues and risks facing companies in all industries.

After introductory remarks from partner Frank Buono, of counsel Stephen Bell led a discussion on the trends toward more serious enforcement of data privacy laws in the U.S. and abroad, and why companies of all types should be increasingly concerned about data privacy issues and risks. Partner Martin Weinstein, along with Tyco International Vice President and Chief Compliance Counsel Matthew Tanzer, next discussed data privacy issues that arise in connection with internal investigations and responses to inquiries from U.S. regulators. In the final presentation, Frank Buono discussed the evolution and expansion of U.S. and European data security and data breach notification laws and the troublesome inconsistencies across jurisdictions. The seminar was concluded with a keynote address by the Honorable William E. Kovacic, Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, who was introduced by partner Barry Nigro.

The seminar, held in the firm's new 34th Floor Conference Center in New York, was attended by over 75 clients and friends.
