On May 15, Immigration Equality, the leading national LGBTQ immigrant rights organization, will honor Willkie with a 2019 Safe Haven Award, in recognition for the firm’s “lifesaving work for LGBTQ and HIV-positive asylum seekers.”

The firm celebrates its sixth year partnering with Immigration Equality in successfully representing oppressed LGBTQ clients from around the world seeking safety in the United States. In 2018 alone, over 30 Willkie attorneys committed more than 1,100 hours handling 11 critical matters, and winning asylum for seven clients since 2017. Additionally, Willkie’s LGBTQ Affinity Group proudly worked with Immigration Equality in support of the 2018 NYC Pride March. Willkie is one of four distinguished honorees to be recognized at the Safe Haven Awards.

Immigration Equality’s award-winning LGBTQ Asylum Program currently represents people fleeing the more than 80 countries where it is a crime or fundamentally unsafe to be LGBTQ. The Asylum Program pairs LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants with top law firms, pro bono partners, and their own legal team, to handle some of the most difficult cases.
