On September 24, Willkie hosted a presentation by Dr. Tyrone Howard on How to Talk to Your Children about Race and Racism. Dr. Howard is a UCLA Professor whose research on race and culture is recognized nationally. The virtual webinar identified and discussed strategies, approaches, and resources that adults can use to engage children ages 3-18 in learning and talking about race and racism in today’s world. Dr. Howard provided eight practical tips for parents, including the importance of making your message age-appropriate and looking for teachable moments.

Dr. Howard is a Professor of Education at UCLA in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies’ Urban Schooling Division. He is also the Director and Founder of the Black Male Institute at UCLA, which is an interdisciplinary cadre of scholars, practitioners, community members, and policymakers dedicated to improving the educational experiences and life chances of Black males. He was also the Director of Center X for the past seven years, which is a consortium of urban school professionals working toward social justice and educational equity in transforming Los Angeles schools.

Before entering higher education, Dr. Howard was a classroom teacher in the Compton Unified School District. A native of Compton, California, Dr. Howard is one of the foremost experts on race, culture, teaching and learning in urban schools.
