Congressional Investigations

Willkie has extensive experience representing both corporations and individuals in Congressional investigations, and we understand the importance of navigating the political and media firestorm that can accompany such investigations.  We have had great success in protecting the legal, professional, and reputational interests of clients who have been compelled to testify, subjected to an investigative interview, or subpoenaed for documents by Congress.

Our congressional investigations practice combines the experience of our government relations, white-collar defense, and compliance and enforcement lawyers, as well as a deep understanding of the industries—and legal and regulatory framework—in which our clients operate. Our team consists of attorneys with a wealth of legislative and executive branch experience.  We have advised clients on investigations conducted by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (Senate PSI), the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Senate Banking Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, the Senate Commerce Committee, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.  We have also guided clients through investigations conducted by ad hoc Congressional committees, such as the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, the Panel on Audit Effectiveness of the Public Oversight Board, and the Advisory Committee on the Auditing Profession of the Department of the Treasury.

We have handled high-profile investigations for clients in the financial services, insurance, mortgage, energy, tax, and hedge fund sectors.  We have also worked on investigations related to financial markets, subprime derivatives, telecommunications, corporate governance, securities, and antitrust issues.
