The publication’s first-ever Excellence in Compliance Awards honored leading compliance practitioners in the field.

Senior counsel Jay Martin was named “Compliance Mentor of the Year” at the publication’s first Excellence in Compliance Awards. The event was hosted virtually on May 18-19.

With a 40+ year career and a reputation as one of the leading voices on compliance and enforcement, Jay Martin has always placed tremendous emphasis on mentorship. Known as the dean of compliance in the energy industry, Jay joined Willkie in 2019 after 15 years as the Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) at Baker Hughes, a GE Company, where he was responsible for leading and directing the company’s comprehensive global compliance program.

Over the course of his career, he trained and mentored a generation of compliance professionals, including future Chief Compliance Officers or General Counsels.

On the topic of mentorship, Jay believes in hiring the top talent, training diligently and supporting individuals when they are ready to move up, ensuring they have the chance to progress in the profession. His trainees are well known and well respected, in both Houston and across the globe, for their work in compliance, which is a true testament to the power of his mentorship role in the industry.
