The Federal Bar Council recently honored litigation associate Shaimaa Hussein with its annual Thurgood Marshall Award for Exceptional Commitment to Pro Bono Service. Ms. Hussein, who was one of only three recipients of this prestigious award, was recognized in the “Rising Star” category. “This award recognizes and celebrates lawyers in private practice who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to providing or facilitating pro bono legal services in federal courts or agencies within the Second Circuit.”

Since joining Willkie in 2011, Ms. Hussein has devoted hundreds of hours working on pro bono matters particularly on behalf of refugees. Her dedication to pro bono work has allowed a number of adults and children to build new lives in the United States, free from the persecution and threats they experienced in their home countries. Last month, the New York State Bar Association presented Ms. Hussein with its President’s Pro Bono Service Award.
