Joseph A. Riley is a partner in the Tax Department.  He specializes in the taxation of investment funds, including hedge funds and mutual funds, both U.S. and non-U.S.  His practice includes taxation of securities, international tax advising, the U.S. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act ("FATCA"), tax reporting for investors in investment funds, IRS assistance, and other associated tax issues faced by investment managers.

In both 2015 and 2016, Joseph was selected to serve on Law360’s Tax Editorial Advisory Board. He is recognized as a leading practitioner by New York Super Lawyers (2015).

  • Advising AllianceBernstein on the tax issues in the structuring and initial offering of AllianceBernstein Multi-Manager Alternative Fund, a registered fund of hedge funds.
  • Advising global insurance company regarding Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).
  • Advising a global asset manager on the merger of investment funds and collective investment trusts.
  • Assisted with tax issues on the merger of master-feeder structures for U.S. mutual fund family.
  • Assisted U.S. fund manager with tax issues for India-focused equity investment fund.
  • Advising non-U.S. asset managers as to placing fund interests into the U.S. investor market.
