It was recently announced in the Belgian Official Journal that on September 1 European partner Michèle Grégoire by Royal Decree will be admitted to the Bar of the Belgian Supreme Court. Admission to the highest bar in Belgium is restricted to only 20 attorneys who are appointed by the King on the recommendation of the Ministry of justice after satisfaction of a rigorous qualification process. While not employees of the Court, admitted attorneys play a critical role in assuring the correct application of justice, particularly with respect to advising litigants on whether their pleas are admissible, as the Court only reviews points of law and not points of fact. Ms. Grégoire, who practices in the firm’s Brussels office, will join special European counsel Isabelle Heenen as a member of the Supreme Court Bar. Ms. Heenen, who also practices in the firm’s Brussels office, was appointed to the Bar about ten years ago. Willkie is the only U.S. firm to be represented in the Belgian Supreme Court Bar.
